We the Daughters of Mary
Help of Christians are the
second biggest and living
part of the great Salesian
Family which relives the
Spirit and Mission of
St. John Bosco who
founded our congregation
in collaboration with Mary
Domenica Mazzarello,
our Co-foundress. St. John Bosco Bosco worked wonders in his life with the assistance of Mary Help of Christians, whom he considered as his mother, teacher, inspirer and guide. He wanted our congregation to be a Living Monument of his gratitude to Mary help of Christians.
Our specific charism is the Christian education and integral formation of the young especially the poorest through the educative style of Don Bosco’s Preventive System which is based on Reason, Religion and Loving Kindness. Today our focus is also on women empowerment through education and development activities as a response to the challenging situations of women in society today. “We believe that today, our missionary passion is expressed in a conscious option for education as the way to Gospel Citizenship. This requires that we be present to and in solidarity with the young and poor. It challenges us to courageously serve the cause of justice and peace as to bring about a more humane society one that respects the dignity of each person”. (Chapter XXI) Our congregation was born on 5th August, 1872 when 11 young girls from Mornese, a hamlet in Italy, with Mary Domenica Mazzarello at the head, committed themselves to God for the service of the poor girls. The tiny seed sprouted and grew into a gigantic tree and today we are living and working in 81 provinces in 89 nations within 5 continents with a total of 1511 local communities.
The first six pioneers from Italy arrived in India on 22nd November, 1922 at Tanjore, Tamilnadu. Today our presence in India has grown into six provinces – Chennai (1946), Shillong (1953), Mumbai (1982), Kolkata (1987), Guwahati (2000), and Bangalore (1993). Today we number 1154 sisters. |
